Particle is committed to providing a safe platform for both emerging and established writers and artists. We are committed to amplifying the voices of those who are marginalized or underrepresented. We welcome submissions by writers and artists from all communities and identities. 

 

We only accept previously unpublished work. While we publish English language works, we welcome bilingual works (that are still comprehensive to a non-native reader). 

 

To get a sense of the kind of work we publish, we strongly encourage you to review our published issues here. We publish bi-annually, in October and February.

 

At the compilation of each issue, a Google Form will be available for submissions. We do not accept submissions via email. We do not charge for submissions, with the exception of contests.

Fiction

Please submit a single document (.doc or .docx). You may submit up to three (3) flash fiction pieces that are no longer than 500 words each or one (1) short fiction piece that is no longer than 1,500 words.

Poetry

Please submit a single document (.doc or .docx). You may only submit a PDF if the structural or visual integrity of the poem is at risk. You may submit up to five (5) poems. Each poem should be no more than 40 lines.

 

We accept all poetic forms and genres but do not accept translations.

Creative Non-Fiction 

Please submit a single document (.doc or .docx). You may submit up to three (3) flash creative nonfiction pieces that are no longer than 500 words each or one (1) creative nonfiction piece that is no longer than 1,500 words. 

 

Works of creative nonfiction include personal essays, lyric essays, reportage, narrative journalism, experimental nonfiction, flash essays/flash nonfiction, vignettes, sketches, comic essays and short memoirs. 

 

Note: Works with name changes and paraphrased conversations should include appropriate  disclaimers. Citations should follow the Chicago Manual guidelines.

Visual Art & Photography

You may submit up to five (5) pieces of artwork and/or photography. Ensure that the quality is at least 320dpi and it should be no longer than 2400 pixels in height or width. Images must be formatted as either JPEG or PNG files and must be Mac and PC compatible. 

 

We consider any style or medium for both the cover and the art insert included in the issue. Please include the title and the medium of each piece. Works without a title will not be considered.

Book Reviews & Criticism   

We welcome book reviews and literary criticism pieces to be published on our blog. If you are interested, please email us at particlemagazineunmc@gmail.com using “INTERESTED IN BOOK REVIEW/CRITICISM” as the subject header, suggesting your piece and links to any previous work. Rolling deadline.

General Guidelines

 

1. Submissions are only open for students studying in Malaysia.

​

2. All submissions should be sent as one Microsoft Word attachment (sole exception to works of Poetry and Artwork & Photography). 

​

3. Please name your file as such: GENRE – TITLE – NAME (e.g. poetry–apple–JeanDoe)

​

4. All submissions should be in 12pt Times New Roman, with at least one-inch margins, and sequentially numbered pages. Fiction and nonfiction should be double-spaced. Poetry should be single-spaced.

​

5. Contributors are asked to include a brief biographical note with their submissions. The format should be in third person (starting with your name) and no more than 150 words.

Sensitive Topics:

​

We accept works that explore controversial topics. We're more than happy to receive works that break the silence and spur on much needed discourse. However, we will not entertain racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic material. 

​

We accept works that utilize profanity as it can be a powerful tool in writing. If it feels right for your piece, then do so. In that vein, a reasonable amount of obscenity and violence is also accepted if that is essential to your piece.

Simultaneous Submissions:

​

We do accept simultaneous submissions. We only ask that if your piece is accepted elsewhere that you let us know as soon as possible.

Response Time:

​

You can expect a response to submissions three (3) to four (4) weeks after the deadline of submissions. Please do not contact us about the status of your submission until after this time has passed. You may reach us at particlemagazineunmc@gmail.com. 

 

If your piece is accepted, you’ll be assigned to one of our editors to work with. Unlike other literary journals, we practice working with writers directly to polish a piece before publishing it. Please be aware that we will only publish works that have been through the editing process.
